1Why Couriers Charge by Size
Vans, planes and bikes run out of space before they run out of weight when they carry light, bulky boxes.
So many couriers charge for the space a parcel takes up, not only its weight on the scale.
2Real Weight vs. Size-Based Weight: Examples
Here are three examples using a divisor of 5,000:
Dimensions: 35 cm × 25 cm × 15 cm
Real weight: 0.9 kg
Formula: (35 × 25 × 15) / 5000
Size-based: 2.63 kg
Chargeable: 3.0 kg (Volumetric)
Dimensions: 25 cm × 20 cm × 15 cm
Real weight: 6.5 kg
Formula: (25 × 20 × 15) / 5000
Size-based: 1.50 kg
Chargeable: 6.5 kg (Actual)
Dimensions: 50 cm × 40 cm × 30 cm
Real weight: 1.2 kg
Formula: (50 × 40 × 30) / 5000
Size-based: 12.0 kg

3How to Pack So You Pay Less
A slightly smaller box can move your parcel into a lower weight step:
Squeeze the Air Out of Soft Items
Clothes, jackets and bedding can be packed in vacuum bags to squeeze out the air. The smaller the parcel, the less size-based weight you pay for.
Use the Right Size Box or Flyer
Do not use a big box filled with paper. Use a flyer or a box that fits the item closely.
4Sorting Out Wrong Weight Charges
Measuring machines can sometimes get a parcel’s size wrong, for example if the box bulges. To protect yourself:
- Photograph the scale: Set up a camera over your scale so photos show the weight and the tracking label.
- Check your bills: Compare the weights on your courier bill with your own records.
- Complain quickly: Ask your courier how long you have to challenge a bill, and send photos and sizes to your account contact.
Common Questions About Parcel Weight
How do couriers work out volumetric weight?
Many couriers multiply length × width × height in centimetres and divide by a set number, often 5,000. The answer is the size-based weight in kilograms. Ask your courier which number it uses.
What is the difference between real weight and chargeable weight?
Real weight is what the scale shows. Chargeable weight is the higher of the real weight and the size-based weight. Couriers that use this rule charge you for the chargeable weight.
Why was I charged for 4 kg when my box weighed 1 kg?
A box of 40 cm × 30 cm × 17 cm works out at (40 × 30 × 17) ÷ 5,000 = 4.08 kg if your courier divides by 5,000. Big but light items, such as shoes or bedding, take up space in vans and planes, so couriers charge for that space.
How can sellers check and challenge wrong weight charges?
Measure each parcel and photograph it on a scale with the tracking label showing before you send it. If a bill shows a higher weight, send the photos to your courier contact and ask for a correction.
